L.A. Liberty

A Libertarian in Leftywood

Not at all. If anything, the blame can be placed on government here.
After all, if there wasn’t a law to protest, he wouldn’t be there protesting on a motorcycle without a helmet. Perhaps he would have died some other day in some other place as a result of not wearing a helmet - but since he explicitly didn’t, who’s to say? There’s no need to speculate because the circumstances surrounding his death are not in question. He died that day, in that place, for that reason. Maybe he regularly wore a helmet. Or if he didn’t, maybe he would have been persuaded to wear a helmet voluntarily instead of having his intelligence and sovereignty insulted “for his protection.” But whether or not he regularly wore one is frankly immaterial - laws that preserve our safety at the expense of our liberty are simply unjust. And above all, every libertarian knows that greater liberty inherently requires greater responsibility and accountability. And an unaccountable, unfree civilization isn’t much of a civilization at all.
But let’s say that this grown man was an idiot and didn’t know what was best for him as well as some bureaucrat (who may or may not be in cahoots with insurance companies who would directly benefit from such a law)… Protecting people from risky behavior and stupid mistakes that hurt no one but themselves is taking statism to its outer limits, don’t ya think?
